It was past midnight. Most of the people had left the party; those who remained had either passed out, succumbing to alcohol-induced sleep, or were sitting up talking in a small group as quiet music played on the stereo system. Lucinda sighed in frustration, realizing that she was never going to get them out of her house. So, without saying goodnight, she went upstairs, locked her bedroom door, and slipped into exhausted oblivion.
